Use of Wikipedia in Academic Essays
I often use Wikipedia as one of my sources in my essays. However, recently a lecturer suggested that I should not do this. Thus, I have written an article with reasons backing up my use of Wikipedia in my essays:
SiChunLAM.com: Use of Wikipedia in Academic Essays (http://www.sichunlam.com/main/archives/2005_02.php#002085)
I am proposing a Statement on the use of Wikipedia:
“This essay uses Wikipedia, amongst other resources, as a source. Wikipedia is a free-content encyclopaedia that anyone can edit. Articles are subjected to a process of community review where contributors can debate and cross-check articles to ensure that they are accurate and reliable. As this is a new resource, there have been numerous debates as to whether a resource produced in this manner can be considered authoritative or trustworthy. The articles I have chosen have been collaborated with other resources listed on this bibliography to ensure that the information presented in my essay is accurate. Today, Wikipedia articles are widely used as a resource as a press source around the world (see Wikipedia as a press source) and widely cited in academic studies (see Wikipedia as an academic source). Increasingly, it is also cited as a resource in books, conferences and even court cases. However, like all resources, there are limitations. For more information on Wikipedia’s strengths and weaknesses and replies to common objections, refer to Replies to common objections.”
