Icelandic. Born in 1980. Interested in most things Old Norse as well as computer science. The latter is well covered here so I concentrate on the former. I've been sporadically active on Wikipedia since the summer of 2003. I edited anonymously for a while but got a username on July 22 2003 with this as my first edit: [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Faroese_language&diff=prev&oldid=1246685)
If you're interested in Norse mythology then please help us arrive at an orthographic standard for it at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Old Norse/Old Icelandic/Old English).
I'm somewhere in the middle ground of the deletionist vs. inclusionist debate. I don't mind fancruft since I often read it myself. On the other hand I recognize the need to have a minimum standard for what's notable enough to be included and what's notable and well-known enough to have its own page (see thoughts below). I've proposed pages for VfD and got them deleted. One was on a Baldur Tryggvason, supposedly a famous Icelandic skateboarder but the article didn't establish notability nor could I verify the information. Another was on "Alshander", a bogus mythological character.

Some pages that should be merged
If you look at Norse mythology you'll see a lot of valkyrie names with links. The thing is that most of these valkyrie names are just that - names. The only thing about Hrist and Mist that has come down to us is that they serve Odin his horn. Others, like Hlökk and Geirskögul don't even have a little factoid like that. Most of these names should be merged into valkyrie or something like list of valkyries. There are exceptions; Hildr, Brynhildr and Sigrún definitely deserve their own pages.
The same goes for the dwarves. We know that Norðri, Suðri, Austri and Vestri stand at the four "ends" of the world and carry the sky. But that's all we know. So they don't need individual pages. Ditto for many of the other dwarves. Ditto for some of the giants.
Operation Valkyrie
As per the above ponderings I've taken to working on the valkyrie pages. I've turned some substubs into redirects and expanded others. I made a valkyrie category for the 12 valkyries I deemed significant enough to have their own pages. I've also been working on the valkyrie article itself. This has been a lot of work and there's plenty more to do. I think this is a nice test case since the valkyries are a relatively small subset of Norse mythology. If I can get the valkyrie articles to a level I'm happy with I'll have a good idea about how much work it would be to improve the rest.
I'm now expanding the project to include other female mythological characters we know little about, e.g. Sjöfn.
Ullr
Hey, you're an admin, right? :) I was wondering if you could move Ull to Ullr. I've been working on that page a lot and decided to use Old Norse spellings within the article. It would be nice if this was consistent with the page title. I'll do the job of making sure there are no double redirects. Haukurth 21:07, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Done! Good job, by the way!--Wiglaf 21:18, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
