User:Adam Bishop/Gdansk vs. Danzig
|
I looked at all the Sun Media newspapers that are available in the electronic archives, going back to 1989 at the earliest. At least for this set of Canadian newspapers, Gdansk is always used for the current city, and Danzig is used only when referring to the city before 1945.
Another thing to note is that because these newspapers are all owned by the same company, they sometimes use the same articles, so there are some repeats that I haven't distinguished.

I hope this is useful...I suppose I might want to post it somewhere more relevant as well... Adam Bishop 07:43, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)
That's pretty consistent with what I've described as our usual practice: current name for current events, historical name at the time of historical events, mentioning the current name as necessary. It seems to be mostly zealots pushing a POV who want something else - and those seem not to be native English speakers. Jamesday 07:47, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)
