Originally from Long Island, New York, I am a Professor in the Humanities Department at Toyo Gakuen University in Chiba, Japan, where I have been living and working since March of 1994. Narrowly speaking, I am a scholar of Buddhism, and especially Korean Seon (Zen) Buddhism. I also have a wide range of interest in broad, pan-Buddhist issues, especially those found in Yogacara/Tathagatagarbha traditions, and am furthermore an avid student of East Asian philosophy and religion (that is, Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism), as a whole. My interest lies primarily in the area of translation and interpretation of classical works for the modern-Western audience. With this kind of intention, I have thus far published one book, which is a translation of a seminal Chan Buddhist scripture, called the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment, which includes a superb commentary by the 15th century Korean monk Gihwa. I have other works in progress impelled by similar motivations, that will have a similar style of presentation.
I have been, for some time now, quite taken with the possibilities inherent in the digital domain, for the development of and sharing of information related to the area East Asian religious/philosophical thought. Therefore, I have developed an extensive web page which contains a wide range of materials connected to the study of East Asian philosophy and religion. Most important on this page at present is the Digital Dictionary of Buddhism.
As far as computers go, I am an anti-Microsoft type who has been using Linux since the spring of 2002 (currently RedHat). I have a link regarding Linux on my site below.
