Rafael Urbano Lugo Colina (born August 12, 1962 in Punto Fijo, Venezuela), best know as Urbano Lugo, is a former right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who played for the California Angels (1985-88), Montreal Expos (1989) and Detroit Tigers (1990).

Lugo was signed by the Angels as an amateur free agent in 1982. His father, with the same name, was a star pitcher in his homeland.

Lugo was moderately effective in his rookie season, starting ten games and coming out of the bullpen in ten more to post a 3-4 record with a 3.69 earned run average; but he never appeared in more than 13 games in any season thereafter, starting only rarely. In his career, Lugo had a record of 6-7, with 91 strikeouts, and a 3.75 ERA in 162 innings.

Lugo Sr. with Bo Diaz
  • On January 6, 1973 the veteran minor league pitcher Urbano Lugo, Sr. joined forces with catcher Bo Diaz in a no-hitter when the Leones del Caracas tripped the Tiburones de La Guaira 6-0 in the Venezuelan Winter League. Thirteen years later, on January 24, 1986, his son - the major league pitcher Urbano Lugo, Jr. - threw another "no-no" in a 4-0 Caracas victory over La Guaira; and once again the catcher was Diaz. Call it coincidence or destiny, there is little explanation for a pair of no-hit games by father and son hurlers, with the same winning and losing teams, and the same catcher.

Quotation

  • "The son of a Venezuelan pitching great of the same name, Lugo was rated the Eastern League's top pitching prospect in 1984 and was 3-4 while spending most of 1985 with the Angels. He won just one more ML game after a January 1986 elbow operation". - Jane Charnin-Aker, at Baseball Library.
