The Upper Hunter is a region and Local Government Area (LGA) of the Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia. The Upper Hunter Shire Council was formed in May, 2004 from Scone Shire and parts of Murrurundi and Merriwa shires.
The towns of the Upper Hunter are Scone, Aberdeen, Murrurundi, and Merriwa. as well as several smaller villages. The Upper Hunter is one of the best horse-rearing regions in Australia. The Burning Mountain Nature Reserve, near Scone, is the site of a subterranean coal seam fire that has been burning for several thousand years.
