The University of the Philippines Los Baņos (UPLB), located at the foot of Mount Makiling in Los Baņos, a town on the shore of Laguna de Bay in Laguna province sixty (60) kilometers to the south of Manila, Philippines, was the first autonomous campus of the University of the Philippines system. It began in March 6, 1909 as the College of Agriculture, one of the first two units of the University of the Philippines. UPLB also has one of the largest campuses of any university in the Philippines, having a total land area of 36 km².

Since the transformation of UPLB into an autonomous campus of the University of the Philippines System during the 1970s, the University became a center for multi-disciplinary studies, with focus in Agriculture, Forestry, Veterinary Medicine and the Sciences. UPLB also became a center for excellence in Biology, Chemistry, Statistics, Physics, Mathematics, Forestry, Engineering, Agriculture, Communications, Computer Science and Information Technology, Agricultural Economics, Development Economics, Agribusiness Management, and Veterinary Medicine.
At present, the University is composed of the College of Agriculture, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Development Communications, College of Economics and Management, College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology, College of Forestry and Natural Resources, College of Human Ecology, and the College of Veterinary Medicine that offer courses ranging from Bachelor of Arts in Agriculture to Doctor in Veterinary Medicine. It also has a Graduate School plus the College of Public Affairs and the School of Environmental Sciences and Management which offer Master of Arts, Master of Science and Ph. D degree courses.
UPLB is also a research center in the fields of science and agriculture and is site of two international research centers, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and SEAMEO-SEARCA and Philippine-based research institutions such as the National Crop Protection Center (NCPC), the National Institute for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH), the Los Baņos offices of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (Philrice) and Philippine Carabao Center, and the Dairy Training and Research Institute (DTRI).
