Overview

The University of St. Gallen for Business Administration, Economics, Law and Social Sciences was founded in 1898 and began operating in 1899. It is therefore one of the oldest universities of its kind in the world. At the beginning of 2000, there were about 4,700 students and some 80 professors. In terms of numbers, the University of St. Gallen may well be one of Europe's smaller universities, but it has Switzerland's largest «faculty of economic sciences». It concentrates on the training and continuing education of experts and leaders in business, public administration, and the law. The University is financed by the Canton of St. Gallen, which gives it far reaching autonomy.

Studies

A new structure of Studies has become operational as of Winter 2001/2002. The program is now divided in Bachelor's, Masters's and Doctoral Programs according to the Bologna Reform.

The Bachelor Programs start with an Assessment year which is the same for all students. Then the students can choose a major for the last two years out of the following list:

  • Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration
  • Bachelor of Arts in Economics
  • Bachelor of Arts in Law
  • Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs
  • Bachelor of Arts in Law and Economics

The last two programs were started in 2001. The program of International Affairs is becoming very popular as only the University of Geneva and the University of St. Gallen HSG are offering such programs in switzerland. But the biggest part of students is still enrolled in Business Administration.

The Master's Programs cover the same range but are more specialized. The Master's program take usally 1 to 2 years.
