Mashhad University, located in the city of Mashhad, is one of Iran's best universities, comparable to the University of Tehran. Its University of Medical Science is ranked as one of the best in the Middle East. Mashhad University is famous in Iran for its Department of Medical Research, its publications and its annual International Medical Congresses. In the year 2001, its department of Medicine was ranked first among the Iranian universities.
