The University of Baltimore, located in Baltimore, Maryland, is part of the University System of Maryland.
Founded in 1925 by a group of Baltimore business professionals, UB sought to provide educational opportunities for working men and women. In the 1970s UB merged with Eastern College, Mount Vernon School of Law, and Baltimore College of Commerce. In 1975 UB became a "upper division academic institution", offering only third and fourth year undergraduate and post-graduate course work. In 1988 it joined the University System of Maryland.
In April 2005 the University System of Maryland's Board of Regents approved plans that would allow UB to start accepting freshmen and sophomores starting in the fall of 2006 under an expansion of its academic mission. It is expected that the University will offer admission to about 250 students as freshmen and sophomores, a number that will gradually increase in the coming years afterwards.
The University is composed of three schools:
- School of Law (http://law.ubalt.edu/)
- Robert G. Merrick School of Business (http://business.ubalt.edu/)
- Yale Gordon College of Liberal Arts (http://www.ubalt.edu/yalegordon/)
The university's campus is in Baltimore's Mt. Vernon neighborhood, close to downtown. The University of Baltimore/Mt. Royal station on the Baltimore Light Rail system is at the northwest edge of the campus, and Penn Station, with Light Rail, Amtrak, and MARC service, is just to the north.
