The United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) was founded in 1996 to help with the education of children in mathematics within the UK. It runs a series of math challenges for Junior (UK year 8 and below), Intermediate (UK year 11 and below) and Senior (UK year 13 and below) age groups. Successful entrants receive a bronze, silver or gold certificate based on their mark in the paper. The very top groups gain entrance to an Olympiad suitable for their age groups. These contain harder questions than the challenges and serve to test entrants' puzzle-solving skills. Entrants at Intermediate level who do not achieve Olympiad levels but are still in the highest groups gain access to the kangaroo stages. These extra stages also have a series of certificates for high scoring participants. The very best of these are allowed to go to a National Mathematics Summer School and may gain access to a mentoring scheme.
