Ulster Popular Unionist Party
|
The Ulster Popular Unionist Party was a unionist political party in Northern Ireland. It was founded in 1980 by James Kilfedder, Member of Parliament for North Down, who led the party until his death in 1995. A few local councillors were elected on the same label.
It is debatable whether it ever constituted a proper political party rather than just a movement for Kilfedder and supporters. This is borne out by the fact that when Kilfedder died in 1995, the three councillors elected on his slate soon drifted off into other Unionist movements and no candidate contested the North Down by-election in Kilfedder's interest.
