Ulster is a town located in Ulster County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 12,544.

History
The Town of Ulster was established in 1879 from part of the Town of Kingston.
Geography
The east town line is formed by the Hudson River, and the south part of the town borders the City of Kingston.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 74.8 km² (28.9 mi²). 69.4 km² (26.8 mi²) of it is land and 5.4 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.20% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,544 people, 4,850 households, and 3,278 families residing in the town. The population density is 180.7/km² (468.1/mi²). There are 5,239 housing units at an average density of 75.5/km² (195.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.44% White, 2.89% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.56% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. 2.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,850 households out of which 30.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 26.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.96.
In the town the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $43,707, and the median income for a family is $51,095. Males have a median income of $38,655 versus $26,146 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,069. 9.0% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.2% of those under the age of 18 and 7.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
