Ugueth Urbina (oo-GET oor-BE-nah), born Ugueth Urtaín Urbina Villarreal (February 15, 1974 in Caracas, Venezuela), is a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the Philadelphia Phillies (since 2005). Previously, Urbina played with the Montreal Expos (1995-2001), Boston Red Sox (2001-02), Texas Rangers (2003), Florida Marlins (2003) and Detroit Tigers (2004-2005). He bats and throws right handed.
Urbina comes straight at the hitter with a moving 93 MPH fastball and a slider that enables him to hold left-handed hitters in check. He also throws a changeup which tails away from righthanders and a splitter that break sharply.
A two-time All-Star, Urbina led the National League in saves with 41 in the 1999 season and helped the Florida Marlins win the 2003 World Series.
On June 8 2005, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired Urbina from the Detroit Tigers for infielder Plácido Polanco. Urbina will pitch in a setup role with the Phillies and be used as a closer when Billy Wagner needs a rest. He provides depth in a bullpen that also features Ryan Madson, who has pitched well setting up Wagner.
In 11 seasons with Montreal, Boston, Texas, Florida and Detroit, Urbina has compiled a 40-46 record with 236 saves and a 3.39 ERA.
