USS Viperfish (SSN-655)
|
No ship of the United States Navy has been named USS Viperfish, presumably for the viperfish, a grotesque, deep-diving, bioluminescent member of the Chauliodontidae family.
Viperfish (SSN-655) is the pseudonym given by Roger C. Dunham to the eponym of his book Spy Sub so that it would pass security screening for classified material while remaining a "true story." The photographs in the book show USS Halibut (SSGN-587). No United States Navy ship has ever been designated SSN-655; SSBN-655 was Henry L. Stimson.
