USS North Carolina (SSN-777), a Virginia-class submarine, will be the fifth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the 12th state. The contract to build her was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia on 30 September 1998 and her keel was laid down on 22 May 2004. Linda Bowman, wife of Admiral Frank L. "Skip" Bowman, the director of Naval Reactors, is the boat's sponsor. In mid-2004 her construction was in progress.
