USAA
|
USAA is a member-owned Fortune 500 company headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. It focuses primarily on providing financial services to the U.S. military and ex-military community; most services are available only to active, reserve, or retired members of the armed forces and their families. It is not, however, affiliated with any government agency, but a private mutual. As of 2004 it had over $81 billion in assets under management for approximately 5 million customers.
Among the services offered are several lines of insurance, including life insurance; banking services through the USAA credit union; financial planning; and discount brokerage and investment services including a line of mutual funds. Other ventures include a real estate investment company, a mail-order retail catalog operation, and travel services.
The United Services Automobile Association was founded in 1922 by a group of military officers. Previously, it had been difficult for military personnel to obtain insurance because of their frequent moves.

USAA was named one of the 100 Best Companies for Working Mothers in 2004 by Working Mothers magazine.
