UEFA Regions Cup
|
The UEFA Regions Cup is a football competition for amateur teams in Europe, run by UEFA. It was held for the first time in 1998-99, and has been played every two years since.
The competition was created as there was no European level competition for amateur teams. A previous UEFA run competition had run from 1966 to 1978, but was cancelled due to lack of interest both by the public and amateur teams themselves. The UEFA executive took interest in amateur competitions again in 1996 and the UEFA Regions Cup was created out of this.
Each country in UEFA is allowed to enter one representative amateur team into the competition. This is usually by domestic competition. The teams have to negotiate a qualifying round before reaching the finals. The finals are hosted by an amateur team; in the first 2 finals the host team has won the competition.
