- Died in office.
- Ernest Gruening was elected to the Senate on October 6, 1955 for the Eighty-forth United States Congress but did not take the oath of office and was not accorded senatorial privileges, Alaska not yet being admitted as a state.
- Resigned to become Governor of Alaska.
- Elected to fill the vacancy caused by the previous representative being elected to the next term, but dying before the term began.
- Successfully contested the election of the representative that was replaced.
- Contested the election of Charles A. Sulzer, and when Sulzer died, continued the contest against his successor and won.
- Appointed by her father, Frank Murkowski, to serve the remainder of his senate term when he was elected governor.
