Twist ending

A twist ending is an unexpected conclusion or climax to a work of fiction, which may contain a surprising irony, or cause the audience to review the story from a different perspective by revealing new information about the characters or plot.
O. Henry was famed for his short stories, which often featured clever twist endings. Also known for twist endings is Chuck Palahniuk, especially his novel Fight Club. Anthology television series such as The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt are notable for their use of twist endings. Likewise, as video games become more cinematic, they occasionally employ twist endings, perhaps the best known being the Metal Gear series.
