Fire Walk With Me

Fire Walk With Me is a 1992 movie directed by David Lynch and starring Sheryl Lee, Ray Wise, Chris Isaak, Kiefer Sutherland, Mädchen Amick, Phoebe Augustine and Dana Ashbrook. The movie title is sometimes given as Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

It was greeted at the Cannes Film Festival with booing from the audience and flopped in the United States, but is now seen by some as David Lynch at his best. It is a prequel to Lynch's television series Twin Peaks (1990-91). To an audience not closely familiar with the TV series, the film is stylish but incomprehensible. The tone of this film is also different from that of the TV series, which mixed genres fluently. The film is a much darker vision of the same town without the occasions of humor that made Twin Peaks so endearing to many viewers.

Lynch filmed a vast amount of footage, reportedly enough for a four-hour film; much of it never made the final cut (which still ran for over two hours). The missing footage remains the 'Holy Grail' for many Twin Peaks fans.

Lynch has a cameo in the film as FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole, reprising a role from the TV series.

Singer David Bowie also appears as Phillip Jeffries, an FBI agent who mysteriously reappears after being gone for a long time.

The film is divided into two sections. The first follows FBI investigators played by Chris Isaak and Kiefer Sutherland as they inquire into the death of a young woman named Theresa Banks (played by Pamela Gidley); the second part, set a year later, presents the last week of Laura Palmer's life. (Laura and Theresa were killed by the same person, and the pilot of the TV series begins the following morning, with the discovery of Laura's body.)

Most of the television cast returned for the prequel, with the notable exceptions of Lara Flynn Boyle who declined to return as Donna (she was replaced by Moira Kelly), and Sherilyn Fenn.

Lynch reportedly planned a second prequel film (possibly utilizing footage edited out of the first movie), but as of 2005 this has yet to come to pass.
