Turfan Depression
|
The Turfan Depression (吐魯番盆地, Turpan Pendi; Uighur: تۇرپان ئويمانلىغى, Turpan Oymanliği) is located in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region in far western China.
The depression, at more than 150 meters below sea level, is the lowest point in China. It is extremely dry, and very hot in the summer, although local inhabitants for many centuries have maintained a complex system of underground aqueducts - sourced from the rivers and mountains to the north -– to supply the region with water for drinking, cleaning, and irrigation.
