Tully (town), New York

Tully is a town located in Onondaga County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,709. The name of the town is derived from the Roman orator Marcus Tullius Cicero.

The Town of Tully contains a village named Tully. The town is on the county's south border.

History

The region was part of the Central New York Military Tract used to pay soldiers of the American Revolution. Tully was first settled in 1795. The first town meeting was held in 1803.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Cortland County, New York. Interstate highway 81 passes through the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 68.1 km² (26.3 mi²). 67.0 km² (25.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.56% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,709 people, 1,030 households, and 744 families residing in the town. The population density is 40.4/km² (104.7/mi²). There are 1,139 housing units at an average density of 17.0/km² (44.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.23% White, 0.44% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,030 households out of which 37.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 9.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% are non-families. 22.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $53,250, and the median income for a family is $63,266. Males have a median income of $46,667 versus $27,721 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,223. 6.7% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.6% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Tully Center -- A hamlet west of Tully village by Interstate 81.
  • Tully Farms -- A location in the north part of the town.
  • Tully Lake -- A lake on the south town line.
  • Tully Lake Park -- A hamlet on the west side of Tully Lake.
  • Vesper -- A hamlet in the west part of the town on Route 80.
