Tucumcari is a city located in Quay County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,989. It is the county seat of Quay CountyTemplate:GR.
Geography
Tucumcari is located at 35°10'10" North, 103°43'32" West (35.169453, -103.725488)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.6 km² (7.6 mi²). 19.5 km² (7.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.13% is water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,989 people, 2,489 households, and 1,607 families residing in the city. The population density is 306.7/km² (793.8/mi²). There are 3,065 housing units at an average density of 156.9/km² (406.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.87% White, 1.29% African American, 1.39% Native American, 1.20% Asian, 0.22% Pacific Islander, 17.10% from other races, and 2.94% from two or more races. 51.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,489 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.4% are married couples living together, 15.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% are non-families. 31.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $22,560, and the median income for a family is $27,468. Males have a median income of $25,342 versus $18,568 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,786. 24.8% of the population and 19.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 29.5% of those under the age of 18 and 16.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
