Trenton, New York

Trenton is a town located in Oneida County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,670. The town is reportedly named after Trenton, New Jersey.

The Town of Trenton is in the northeast part of the county.

History

The town was formed in 1797 from the Town of Schuyler in Herkimer County, New York. The name may have been selected because some local soldiers fought at the Battle of Trenton. The town includes areas form the Holland and Servis Patents.

Geography

The West Canada Creek forms the eastern town line.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 113.2 km² (43.7 mi²). 112.2 km² (43.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.89% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,670 people, 1,776 households, and 1,287 families residing in the town. The population density is 41.6/km² (107.8/mi²). There are 1,932 housing units at an average density of 17.2/km² (44.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.07% White, 0.39% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 0.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,776 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 22.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 99.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $49,559, and the median income for a family is $56,377. Males have a median income of $32,523 versus $28,516 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,139. 5.9% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.4% of those under the age of 18 and 3.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
