Trenton, Michigan

Trenton is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 19,584.
The headquarters of the Anderdon band of Wyandot is in the town. The Battle of Monguagon also took place in Trenton on the site of the modern-day Elizabeth Park (http://travel.michigan.org/detail.asp?m=4;7&p=G19916).
The city is part of Downriver, a collection of mostly blue-collar communities due south of Detroit on the Detroit River, thus "down-the-river."
The industrial sector dominates the local sources of employment, chiefly the DaimlerChrysler Trenton Engine Plant (http://www.daimlerchrysler.com/dccom/0,,0-5-8793-1-466583-1-0-0-0-0-0-91-7155-0-0-0-0-0-0-0,00.html), Solutia, Inc. and the Detroit Edison Trenton Channel Power Plant.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.4 km² (7.5 mi²). 18.9 km² (7.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.67% water. The city is located between Detroit, Michigan, and Monroe, Michigan in the state's southeastern lower pennisula. The city is located on the western bank of the Detroit River and is bounded by Grosse Ile, Michigan to the east, Riverview, Michigan to the north, Brownstown Township, Michigan to the west and south and Woodhaven, Michigan to the west.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,584 people, 8,137 households, and 5,590 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,035.8/km² (2,682.8/mi²). There are 8,345 housing units at an average density of 441.4/km² (1,143.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.92% White, 0.37% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 1.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,137 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the city the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 90.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $49,566, and the median income for a family is $61,891. Males have a median income of $52,123 versus $31,892 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,288. 5.1% of the population and 4.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.1% of those under the age of 18 and 4.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Public Schools
