Travelers Rest, South Carolina

Travelers Rest is a city located in Greenville County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,099.

"TR" as the city is known around the area is just North of Greenville, SC. The town is kept alive mostly by its proximity to Furman University.

The name "Travelers Rest" came from the fact that the city is situated almost directly against the border with the North Carolina mountains. Travelers would stop for a moment in the city, before they began the difficult journey up into the mountains. Often, travelers would have to spend the winter in the city, waiting for the snow to clear in the mountains, before continuing northward.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.4 km² (4.4 mi²). 11.4 km² (4.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,099 people, 1,563 households, and 1,137 families residing in the city. The population density is 359.7/km² (930.8/mi²). There are 1,729 housing units at an average density of 151.7/km² (392.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.36% White, 18.30% African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.68% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 4.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,563 households out of which 38.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.6% are married couples living together, 18.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% are non-families. 22.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $34,917, and the median income for a family is $38,229. Males have a median income of $30,377 versus $22,634 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,704. 15.8% of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.9% of those under the age of 18 and 11.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
