This shopkeeper owns a rather small shop at first, called "Nook's Cranny". When the combined number of Bells (currency in Animal Crossing) used to buy or sell items reaches 25,000, Tom Nook will close the shop for a day and make the store into a larger shop called. "Nook 'n Go". When the Bell total reaches 65,000, he will close for a day and reopen as "Nookway". Finally, when the Bell total reaches 150,000 and a visitor from another town visits Nookway, Tom Nook will close, then reopen at the two-story shop "Nookington's".
When the player first comes to his or her town in Animal Crossing, he or she will have to work for Nook. He will give the player small chores, such as delivering items and planting flowers.
Nook can buy turnips that Joan sells every Sunday. The selling price is different each day, however, and the player runs the risk of buying turnips for more than Nook is willing to pay.
At the end of every month, Tom Nook runs a lottery. To participate, the player must give him five tickets which can be obtained when the player buys clothing, furniture, wallpapers, or carpets.
Tom Nook's name probably comes from the name of the Tanuki, a character in Japanese folklore.
When the shop is upgraded to "Nookington's", Timmy and Tommy Nook work upstairs selling the clothing, furniture, wallpaper, and carpet.
A trophy of Tom Nook is obtainable in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Tom Nook's shop names are all puns and references:
- "Nook's Cranny" is a reference to the phrase "[every] nook and cranny".
- "Nook 'n Go" is a reference to Stop 'n Go, an American convenience store.
- "Nookway" is a reference to Safeway, a supermarket chain.
- "Nookington's" is a reference to Covington's, a department store.
