Tioga is a town located in Tioga County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,840.

History
The first settlers arrrived around 1792.
The town, formerly organized in 1788 as part of the "Old Town of Chemung," was renamed as Tioga in 1818.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 154.0 km² (59.5 mi²). 152.0 km² (58.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.31% water.
The Susquehanna River forms the south town boundary.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,840 people, 1,849 households, and 1,362 families residing in the town. The population density is 31.8/km² (82.5/mi²). There are 2,041 housing units at an average density of 13.4/km² (34.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.95% White, 0.14% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 1.10% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,849 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.01.
In the town the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.0 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $36,960, and the median income for a family is $46,650. Males have a median income of $27,169 versus $21,170 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,813. 6.5% of the population and 3.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.3% of those under the age of 18 and 3.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

- Smithboro -- A hamlet west of Tioga Center and near the Susquehanna River on Route 17C.
- Straits Corners -- A hamlet by the north town line.
- Tioga Center -- A hamlet in the southeast part of the town on Route 17C near the Susquehanna River.
