Tinicum Township is a census-designated place and township located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 4,353. Included within the township's boundaries are the communities of Lester and Essington. The township borders the city of Philadelphia to the northeast, and is separated from neighboring Ridley Township by Darby Creek.
Geography
Tinicum Township is located at 39°52'8" North, 75°17'17" West (39.868962, -75.288273)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 22.6 km² (8.7 mi²). 14.9 km² (5.7 mi²) of it is land and 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 34.10% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,353 people, 1,749 households, and 1,136 families residing in the township. The population density is 292.8/km² (758.5/mi²). There are 1,876 housing units at an average density of 126.2/km² (326.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.08% White, 0.80% Black or African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 1.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,749 households out of which 27.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.07.
In the township the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.8 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $42,910, and the median income for a family is $49,129. Males have a median income of $37,358 versus $27,134 for females. The per capita income for the township is $19,203. 7.6% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.5% of those under the age of 18 and 2.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
