Tigana

Tigana (1990) is a fantasy novel by Guy Gavriel Kay, set in a fictional country, the Palm Peninsula that somewhat resembles medieval Italy as well as the Peloponnesos in shape.
The country has been conquered by two powerful sorcerers, one is Brandin, king of Ygrath, the other the warlord Alberico from the empire of Barbadior. The story is largely that of a group of rebels attempting to overthrow one of them and win back their homeland.
Many of the rebels are natives of the province of Tigana, which won a number of significant victories against the invader before being overrun: in retaliation for this, and in particular for the death of his son in one battle, the sorceror-king used magic to wipe Tigana and its name from history.
Only those born in Tigana before the invasion can hear or speak its name, or remember it as it was; as far as everyone else is concerned, that area of the country has always been an insignificant part of a neighbouring province.
