Thurman is a town located in Warren County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,199. The town name is from John Thurman, an early landowner.

History
John Thurman was one of a group of investors who started the town's settlement in 1790 at Elm Hill. The Town of Thurman was established in 1792. Originally the town was called Athol by early settlers. The town was subsequently divided to form other towns in Warren County.
Geography
The Hudson River defines the eastern edge of the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 240.3 km² (92.8 mi²). 236.5 km² (91.3 mi²) of it is land and 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.58% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,199 people, 466 households, and 338 families residing in the town. The population density is 5.1/km² (13.1/mi²). There are 642 housing units at an average density of 2.7/km² (7.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.66% White, 0.50% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 466 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.7% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 21.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 2.96.
In the town the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 106.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $36,382, and the median income for a family is $38,523. Males have a median income of $31,111 versus $22,829 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,278. 11.9% of the population and 10.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.5% of those under the age of 18 and 11.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
