The Theatre
|
- This article is about one specific theatre in London; for information on theatres in general, see Theater.
The Theatre was an Elizabethan playhouse located in Shoreditch, in North London. It was built in 1576 by the actor Richard Burbage and his brothers. Burbage and his company of players, The Chamberlain's Men, gradually became the best-known theatre company in London, and acquired William Shakespeare as their leading playwright.
In 1599, the lease on the land on which The Theatre was built was due to expire. The company solved this problem by taking the theatre apart, and transporting the timber across the river, rebuilding it on a new site in Bankside. This new theatre was renamed the Globe Theatre.Template:UK-struct-stub
