The Rising is an album by Bruce Springsteen, released in 2002 (see 2002 in music). Springsteen's first record of any sort in seven years, this much-anticipated first outing with the E Street Band in 18 years was everything fans hoped it would be. Mostly a reflection on the September 11 attacks, it was a critical and popular success, and hailed the return of "The Boss".
Some of the songs on the album had been written before September 11. "Further On (Up The Road)" was performed live in Madison Square Garden during the summer of 2000, it was recorded live by HBO which decided against airing it in the special, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band: Live In New York City. "My City of Ruins" was originally performed in, and concerned, Asbury Park. "Waiting On A Sunny Day" was originally written for either the Lucky Town or Human Touch albums.
"Nothing Man" was completed in 1994 and uses a synthesizer sound from R.E.M.'s "New Orleans Instrumental No. 1". "Mary's Place" is inspired by Sam Cooke's "Meet Me at Mary's Place", while "Let's Be Friends" takes musical form from John Mellencamp's "Cherry Bomb" and Mariah Carey's "Dreamlover".
