2000 film
The 2000 film was written by Robert Rodat, directed by Roland Emmerich, and stars Mel Gibson.
The plot is a fictionalized account of a colonel during the American Revolution. In this version, Gibson plays Colonel Benjamin "The Ghost" Martin, who is driven by a desire for revenge against the cruel British colonel William Tavington (played by Jason Isaacs) to fight the British in colonial South Carolina.
The film has been heavily criticized for its historical inaccuracies, including the creation of British atrocities and the inclusion of British General Cornwallis at the final battle, which is based on Cowpens. Benjamin Martin is likely a combination of Francis Marion the "Swamp Fox" and Daniel Morgan, whose strategy for the Cowpens Emmerich imitates in the climax. Colonel William Tavington is based on Banastre Tarleton, who is infamous for his legion's cruel treatment of surrendering Americans at Waxhaws, and William Ferguson, who was killed at the Battle of Kings Mountain.
