The Locust
|
The Locust are a powerviolence band from San Diego California.
Known for their strange style of music, The Locust have a synth-heavy, distorted, crust punk (particularly on early releases) and experimental/noise-influenced sound and a controversial and disturbing art rock stage presence. Singer Justin Pearson has said, "I just want to change the way people look at music or maybe just destroy it in general." Members include Justin Pearson, singer and bass guitar player, Gabe Serbian on drums, Joey Karam, keyboards, and Bobby Bray playing guitar. Some members formerly played in a somewhat well known hardcore emo band called Swing Kids. Holy Molar is a notable Locust side-project.
The Locust have a daunting stage presence. Costumed in skin-tight, full-body, white (or green) suits with large, black mesh, bug-like eye and mouth coverings, these suits help create a creepy and strange atmosphere during their shows.
Lyrically, The Locust is a scathing satire of popular mainstream US culture, homosexual culture, and US politics.
Also worth noting is their purposefully tasteless merchandise such as their puke-shaped (and coloured) 7" split with Arab on Radar, and the compacts which look suspiciously like cocaine mirrors.
To download audio samples of The Locust is one thing, but the band recommends that in order to get the full impact of the band one should see them live.
