The Lion King 1½ (also known as The Lion King 3: Hakuna Matata in some countries) is an animated film, the sidestory to The Lion King made by The Walt Disney Company. The movie focuses on the characters Timon and Pumbaa before they met Simba.
This feature was released on DVD and video on February 10, 2004. The film was released directly to home video, foregoing the usual release to theaters before such. This movie was based on the The Lion King's Timon and Pumbaa episode "Once Upon a Timon."
Most memorable are Mystery Science Theater 3000-like moments where the characters comment on the original film's proceedings.
The musical "Fiddler on the Roof" is referenced in the song "Sunrise, Sunset".
The movie is often compared to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
It is generally regarded by fans of "The Lion King" as not being part of the Lion King universe, as it deals sloppily with many subjects, and the time frame of the movie is not coherent.
