The Kovenant is a Norwegian band which has evolved from black metal to space metal and cyber metal over the years. Originally the band was called Covenant, but due to a dispute with the Swedish electro band with the same name (see Covenant (band)), it was later changed to The Kovenant.

Biography
The Kovenant was formed in 1993 by two artists known as Nagash and Blackheart. After several unsuccessful low-budget demos the band finally found a record label willing to release their debut album titled In Times Before The Light. This album, released in 1997 by Mordgrimm, launched the band; for their second album a much greater momentum was generated. At this time Hellhammer (of Mayhem), Astennu and Sverd joined the band. The Kovenant's sophomore album Nexus Polaris – released by the Germany-based label Nuclear Blast in 1998 – delved further into the prototype space metal genre and the industrial-tinged cyber metal genre. The album was successful on a large scale due to Nuclear Blast's promotion.
With the next album, Animatronic (1999), The Kovenant's style changed drastically once again, partly due to the departure of Astennu and Sverd. To reflect the new musical style, the members changed their pseudonyms: Nagash became Lex Icon, Blackheart became Psy Coma, and Hellhammer became Von Blomberg. Nagash also left Dimmu Borgir (in which he played bass) so he could fully concentrate on The Kovenant.
After Animatronic, the band decided to re-release their first album, now enhanced by a larger budget and more experience. Nuclear Blast refused, however, and the band found an ally in Hammerheart Records. Soon In Times Before The Light was re-recorded and released with extra keyboard segments. During this period a tour re-release of Nexus Polaris was also created.
In 2003 the long-awaited fourth album S.E.T.I. came out. It again sounded like nothing The Kovenant had done before. The album was once again released by Nuclear Blast. Shortly after the album was released Von Blomberg left the band. Two new members were recruited, Küth and Brat. The band is currently working on a new album, as well as a DVD.
