CHRISTMAS ALBUM (2003) is Jethro Tull's 21st studio album. As the name may suggest, this is a collection of Christmas Music. To Jethro Tull fans, this is not such a novel idea, but rather a logical one; Ian's often said his favorite holdiay is the Xmas, for its softening of human relations and the feeling of joy and giving, etc. etc. Well, if you're not a Tull fan, you may not find this to be such a keen 'Xmas' listen; and if you're not an Xmas fan this is right out for you. BUT; if you happen to be a fan of one or both of said institutions, you'll find this CD to be an extremely strong and viable addition to JT's studio catalog. Undoubtedly not chock full original rock or groundbreaking music, CHRISTMAS ALBUM instead features a generous and interesting collation of musical source. The traditionals (listed above), re-recorded Tull classics "Ring Out..." "Jack Frost..." "Fire at Midnight"..., as well as some new Ian Anderson originals "Birthday Card at Christmas"... "First Snow on Brooklyn" and even guitarist Martin Barre's "A Winter Snowscape" (From his third solo CD STAGE LEFT). It is both a gift to the longtime fans of the band, but also something the family might tolerate in the background over Chrismas dinner...no definitely Christmas Football....maybe. Of superfluous note is that this album was recorded 'by mail' so to speak; Ian's parts were recorded in one place, then guitar in another, etc., and some critical fans claim this process injured the 'feel' of the recording. This author disagrees, and actually, this production really does mark some of Tull's most mature and well-arranged musical passages in years, not to mention a truly pristine audio mix. The players are in excellent if albeit controlled form, and the entire thesis of the album, a la Mr. Anderson, plays off with masterful ease. 16 tracks and all consistent and very enjoyable. As of Spring 2005, this is Jethro Tull's most recent studio(s) album.
