The Good Son is the pilot episode of the television show Frasier.
The first episode attempts to both establish the show and distance itself from its parent, Cheers. Frasier Crane has left Boston and has moved to his hometown Seattle, where he has managed to fix a job at KACL radio station presenting a phone-in show. The first scene, with the frontplate The Job shows him giving a monologue concerning his life at Cheers. In the next scene The Brother, Niles Crane, soon requests their father lives with Frasier due to a recent gunshot injury incurred during his job as a policeman. Niles cannot take Martin in due to him not "[getting] on with Maris". With Martin Crane comes Eddie the Dog, and Martin's old chair – somewhat out-of-place in the stylish apartment, a symbol of Martin himself. During the show the father and son confront some of the problems around which the series will focus – chiefly the cultural qualities of Frasier and everyman qualities of Martin. Niles agrees to "share the load", and agrees to pay for a home care specialist. Frasier and his father spend a portion of the episode recruiting a live-in carer – against Frasier's better judgement they hire Daphne Moon – a whimsical Mancunian claiming "psychic abilities". The episode ends with a scene entitled Lupe Velez wherin Martin phones Frasier's radio show, and indirectly apologises for his lack of appreciation.
