Charles Edward Daniels (born October 28, 1936) is a veteran country music singer. He was born on in Wilmington, North Carolina, and began writing and performing in the 1950s. In addition to country music, he performed rock and jazz. He now resides in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, where the city has named a park after the music legend.
In 1964, Daniels sold a song "It Hurts Me" to Elvis Presley. Daniels recorded his first solo album, Charlie Daniels, in 1970. His first hit, "Uneasy Rider", came off his 1972 second album, Honey in the Rock. In 1974, Daniels organized the first in a series of Volunteer Jam concerts. Daniels won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal in 1979 for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". Other Daniels' hits include "In America", "The South's Gonna Do It", "Long Haired Country Boy", "Still in Saigon", and "The Legend of Wooley Swamp."
Daniels was an early supporter of Jimmy Carter's presidential bid and performed at his inauguration. In 2003, Daniels published an Open Letter to the Hollywood Bunch in defense of George W. Bush's Iraq policy. His 2003 book Ain't No Rag: Freedom, Family, and the Flag contains this letter as well as many other personal statements. Though Daniels promoted the U.S. invasion of Iraq, he has never served in the military, causing some to label him a "chickenhawk". On March 7, 2003, Tamara Saviano, manager of the Nashville office of Jones Radio Networks and a producer for the Great American Country network, was fired after Daniels' publicist complained to her superiors. In her personal email account, Saviano received a mass email from the publicist containing a political editorial by Daniels and replied via email registering her objections to receiving the material.
