The Blob is an independently-made American science-fiction movie from 1958, filmed in color and widescreen, that achieved instant success and is still recognized today partly because it starred Steve McQueen and Aneta Corsaut in their first film roles, and partly because it is one of the prototypes of 1950s American sci-fi films.
In the original version, the Blob is an amorphous creature from another planet which lands on Earth encased in a meteor. It escapes, and survives and grows by absorbing any human life with which it comes in contact. A group of teenagers discover the Blob but the adults won’t believe them until it is almost too late.
This movie spawned a sequel in 1972 called Beware! The Blob, In which a part of the original Blob is revived and the same terror follows. Beware! The Blob is notable for being the only feature film directed by actor Larry Hagman.
A 1988 remake rewrote the plot to make the Blob a secret government project gone wrong.
The Blob was directed by Irvin Shortess Yeaworth Jr., who filmed much of the movie in his back yard in Pennsylvania. He was never particularly proud of the film. Yeaworth directed more than 400 films for motivational, educational, and entertainment purposes.
