Thaton
|
Thaton is a town in southern Myanmar on the Tenasserim plains.
Thaton was once an important seaport on the Gulf of Martaban, but silting has resulted in the coastline moving 10 miles (16 km) away. Thaton was a sight of Mon culture as early as 300 BC and was subject to a heavy Indian influence from the time of Ashoka. The town remained a center of the Mon kingdom in southern Myanmar until being conquered by Anawratha of Pagan in 1057.
