Terra de Vera Cruz
|
Terra de Vera Cruz was the second name of the Portuguese colonies in South America that later became Brazil.
It replaced the original name, Ilha de Santa Cruz, in the 16th century after the land was recognised to be a continent rather than an island anymore. The country was subsequently divided for administration into the vice-kingdom of Brazil and that of Grão-Pará.
Terra de Vera Cruz means land of the true cross.
