Terence Cardinal Cooke

Terence James Cooke, later Terence Cardinal Cooke, (1 March, 1921 - 6 October, 1983) was the tenth bishop (seventh archbishop) of the Roman Catholic diocese of New York. He was born in New York, entered St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie in 1940 and was ordained a priest on December 1, 1945. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of New York on September 15, 1965, and ordained a bishop on December 13, 1965 with the titular see of Summa. He was appointed Archbishop of New York on March 2, 1968 and appointed Archbishop for the Military Services on April 4, 1968. He was elevated to Cardinal on April 28, 1969, and served as archbishop until his death from cancer. He is interred in the crypt under the altar of St. Patrick's Cathedral.
