Tennessee Theatre
|
The Tennessee Theatre, located in Knoxville, is the Official State Theatre of Tennessee and opened in 1928. Its interior is fashioned in the Moorish style, and it was one of the first public buildings in Knoxville to have air conditioning. The theatre also features a beautiful antique Wurlitzer Organ, which has recently been restored. The theatre closed intermittently in the late 1970s, but more recently has been used by the Appalachian Ballet and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. After being closed for renovations from 2003 - 2004 the theater has been completely restored to its original glamour. A larger stage and a new marquee were added in order to accommodate larger productions. It was reopened in January 2005. The Tennessee Theatre is on the National Register of Historic Places.
