Television presenter
|
A television presenter is a British term for a person who is known for introducing or hosting television programmes. Nowadays it is common for minor celebrities in other fields to take on this role, but there are also a number of people who have made their name solely within the field of presenting, particularly within children's television, where celebrity is less important.
A television presenter may double as an actor, singer, etc, but is normally known to the public primarily as the presenter of a particular programme or type of programme. Exceptions include many presenters of political or scientific programmes who are often professionals in the relevant field, or celebrities who have made their name in one area, but have other interests or expertise in another area. For example, British comedian Michael Palin now presents programmes about travel, something that has interested him since childhood.
In the USA, such a person is typically called a host or an emcee.
