History
Tazewell County was created on December 20, 1799. The land for the county was taken from portions of Wyth and Russell Counties.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,347 km² (520 mi²). 1,346 km² (520 mi²) of it is land and 0 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 44,598 people, 18,277 households, and 13,232 families residing in the county. The population density is 33/km² (86/mi²). There are 20,390 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (39/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.16% White, 2.29% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.16% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 18,277 households out of which 28.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.20% are married couples living together, 10.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.60% are non-families. 25.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.85.
In the county, the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 27.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 92.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.70 males.
