Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 20,125 people, 7,978 households, and 5,720 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 715.5/km² (1,853.7/mi²). There are 8,550 housing units at an average density of 304.0/km² (787.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 81.59% White, 14.19% African American, 0.24% Native American, 1.52% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.11% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 2.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,978 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% are non-families. 23.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 2.98.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who are 65 years of age or older.
