Tappan is a hamlet (and a census-designated place) located in Rockland County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 6,757.
Tappan is in the Town of Orangetown.
Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the region has a total area of 7.2 km² (2.8 mi²). 7.2 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,757 people, 2,261 households, and 1,887 families residing in the community. The population density is 935.1/km² (2,423.0/mi²). There are 2,294 housing units at an average density of 317.5/km² (822.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 82.27% White, 1.27% African American, 0.12% Native American, 13.51% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.48% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 6.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,261 households out of which 37.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.6% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.5% are non-families. 13.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.27.
In the region the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 28.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.8 males.
